How to make text bigger on your phone, tablet or laptop

Helpful Guide

If reading messages, emails, websites, or settings menus feels harder than it used to, you do not need to struggle through tiny text. Most devices have built-in options to make words easier to read.

This can make a real difference for everyday tasks such as replying to WhatsApp messages, checking online banking, joining a video call, or reading an email without leaning into the screen.

The simple version: increase the text size in your device settings first, then use browser zoom or app-specific settings if one screen still looks too small.

This guide covers iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and Windows laptops in calm, practical steps.

Why changing text size is worth doing

Many people leave their devices on the default setting for years, even when it stops feeling comfortable. Making text bigger can help you:

  • Read messages more easily without eye strain.
  • Tap the right option more confidently because labels are clearer.
  • Feel less rushed when checking emails, websites, or bank screens.
  • Keep using the device independently instead of avoiding tasks that feel fiddly.

If you help an older parent or relative with technology, this is one of the easiest improvements you can make straight away.

Good to know: making text much larger can slightly change where buttons and menus appear. If something looks odd afterwards, reduce the setting a little until it feels comfortable.

How to make text bigger on an iPhone or iPad

Apple gives you two useful levels. You can make text a bit bigger through normal display settings, or much bigger through accessibility settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness and then Text Size.
  3. Move the slider until the sample text feels easier to read.

If that still does not feel large enough:

  1. Go back to Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility and then Display & Text Size.
  3. Tap Larger Text.
  4. Turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes if you want even bigger options.
  5. Move the slider until the text feels right.

You can also switch on Bold Text in the same area if letters still look faint.

How to make text bigger on an Android phone or tablet

Android menus vary a little by brand, so the quickest approach is often to use the search bar inside Settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for Font size or look for Accessibility.
  3. Open Font size and move the slider until text looks easier to read.
  4. Open Display size as well if you want buttons and on-screen items to look larger too.

On some phones, these options sit inside Display, while on others they appear under Accessibility or Vision. If the words differ slightly, do not worry. The key terms to look for are Font size and Display size.

Helpful tip: if a website still looks small in Chrome on Android, you can usually turn on page zoom in the browser’s accessibility settings as well.

How to make text bigger on a Windows laptop

If email, web pages, or file names look too small on your laptop, Windows lets you enlarge just the text or the whole screen layout.

  1. Select Start and open Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility and then Text size.
  3. Move the slider to the right until the sample text feels comfortable.
  4. Select Apply.

If icons, buttons, and windows still look too small after that, go to Settings, then System, then Display, and increase the Scale setting.

This can be especially useful on smaller laptops where everything feels cramped.

If websites or emails are still too small

Sometimes the device setting helps in most places, but one website or app still feels awkward. In that case, try the reading controls inside the app or browser as a second step.

  • On Chrome: look in the browser settings for zoom or accessibility options.
  • On Microsoft Edge: you can increase the default font size in the browser settings.
  • In email apps: some apps have their own display or reading settings as well.

If you mainly use your laptop for email and websites, browser zoom can be enough on its own. If you use the whole device for many tasks, the main Windows text-size setting is the better place to start.

What to do if the text becomes too big

If words look clearer but the screen suddenly feels crowded, just step the setting back slightly. You are not trying to pick the largest option. You are trying to find the setting that feels comfortable every day.

  • Adjust gradually rather than jumping straight to the biggest setting.
  • Test a few tasks afterwards, such as reading an email or opening WhatsApp.
  • Keep going until it feels natural, not oversized.

Do not put up with tiny text just because that is how the device arrived. These settings are there to be used, and changing them does not damage the device.

When one-to-one help can save time

If the settings menus feel confusing, or if you are trying to make several devices easier for an older relative to use, it can help to have someone patient guide the changes properly. A small accessibility tweak often leads to bigger improvements in confidence with email, online forms, messaging, and video calls.

Simply Tech Support can help with phones, tablets, laptops, accessibility settings, safer online habits, and practical one-to-one support at home.
