Helpful Guide
Changing phones should feel like a fresh start, not a gamble with important phone numbers. If your contacts are not backed up properly first, it is easy to end up missing family numbers, medical contacts, or the person who helps with your banking, broadband, or appointments.
The good news is that you usually do not need anything technical. In most cases, the safest backup is simply making sure your contacts are synced to the right Apple or Google account before you move to the new phone.
The simple version: turn on contact syncing, check that your names appear in iCloud or your Google account, and do not wipe or trade in the old phone until you have checked the new one properly.
This guide walks through the calm, practical steps for iPhone and Android.
Why contacts sometimes go missing
People often assume every phone number is already backed up, but that is not always true. Contacts can be saved in different places, including the phone itself, a SIM card, iCloud, or a Google account.
Problems usually happen when:
- Contacts were saved only on the old device and never synced anywhere else.
- The phone is signed in to the wrong account or more than one account.
- The new phone is set up with a different Apple ID or Google account from the old one.
- The old phone is reset too early before anyone checks the transfer properly.
Important: do not factory reset, recycle, or trade in your old phone until you can see your important contacts on the new device.
Before you start
A few small checks make the whole job smoother:
- Charge the old phone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Make sure you know which Apple ID or Google account you actually use.
- Keep the old phone nearby until the new one is fully checked.
- Pick three or four important contacts you will use as a quick test later.
How to back up contacts on an iPhone
On an iPhone, the usual safe option is iCloud. When Contacts is turned on in iCloud settings, your contacts are stored in your Apple account and can appear on other devices signed in to the same account.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud.
- Look for Contacts under the apps using iCloud and make sure it is turned on.
- Leave the phone on Wi-Fi for a little while so it has time to finish syncing.
If you want extra reassurance, sign in to iCloud Contacts on a computer or tablet and check whether your important names appear there.
Useful habit: after turning iCloud Contacts on, check one or two recent entries. If they appear on iCloud.com, your contacts are in a much safer place than if they only live on the handset.
How to back up contacts on an Android phone
On Android, the usual safe option is your Google account. Menu names vary a bit by phone brand, so do not worry if the wording on your device is slightly different.
- Open the Contacts app or search inside Settings for contacts sync or back up contacts.
- Look for Back up & sync device contacts or Google Contacts sync.
- Turn syncing on and choose the Google account you want to keep using.
- Give the phone a little time on Wi-Fi so the sync can finish.
If some contacts are stored only on the device or SIM card, move or import them into your Google account so they are not left behind on the old phone. If you want an extra copy, many Android phones also let you export contacts to a VCF file from the Contacts app.
For a simple check, open Google Contacts on a computer and see whether your key names are visible there.
Do a quick backup check before you change phones
This is the step many people skip. It only takes a minute and can save a lot of stress.
- Check your cloud account first. Look in iCloud Contacts or Google Contacts and make sure your names are there.
- Search for your test contacts. Pick a family number, a medical contact, and another important person.
- Set up the new phone with the same Apple ID or Google account.
- Wait for the new phone to finish syncing before deciding anything has gone wrong.
- Only reset the old phone after you have checked everything properly.
If contacts look incomplete on the new phone, stop there. Check the account on the old phone first rather than trying lots of random buttons. Quick guesses often make the situation more confusing.
What if some contacts are still missing?
Do not panic. Missing contacts do not always mean they are gone forever. Work through the basics calmly:
- Check you are signed in to the correct Apple or Google account.
- Look for more than one contact account on the phone, especially if an old email address is still connected.
- Check whether contacts were saved on the SIM card or device only.
- Use the old phone as your reference point until the transfer is complete.
If the transfer still does not look right, it is usually better to get patient one-to-one help before resetting anything further.

When patient support can save time
For many independent clients and families, the difficult part is not the tapping itself. It is knowing which account matters, what is safe to press, and when to stop before a reset causes unnecessary stress.
